Biography

Sue Green started fencing in 1965, and at the age of 16 competed in the World Youth Championships at Crystal Palace. In 1968 she won both the national under-23 and senior foil titles as a 17-year-old and when she went to the first of her three Olympics at Mexico in 1968, she was just 18. Her best Olympic result was at the 1972 München Games when she reached the foil quarter-final, where she unfortunately lost all five of her bouts.

In addition to competing at three Olympics, Green took part in five World Fencing Championships and the 1970 Edinburgh British Empire and Commonwealth Games, and won a gold medal in the team foil representing England. Major wins to her credit included the Deprez Trophy three times and the de Beaumont International twice. Green later became a coach at the Rochdale Fencing Club, formed in 1971.
