Biography

The son of a Hampshire schoolteacher, William Marsh joined the Civil Service at the age of 16 and rose to become one of the top Civil Servants, holding many senior positions. Between 1926-20 he was director of Establishment at the Ministry of Labour and then served in the Trade Boards Division of the Ministry between 1930-37. During World War II he worked for the Ministry of Fuel and Power. Marsh was awarded the CBE in 1935.

As a fencer, Marsh had a long career. He was the national sabre champion in 1908 and 1909 and competed in the team sabre event at each of the four Olympics between 1908-24. He also competed in the individual event in 1908 and 1912.
