Biography

Foil fencer Jürgen Brecht participated in three consecutive Olympic Games: in 1960 and 1964 with the mixed German team, and in 1968 for West Germany. With the German team he earned a bronze medal in 1960 and reached the quarterfinals in the next two editions. For his bronze medal in 1960, he was honored with the Silver Bay Leaf, the highest sports award in Germany. Between 1957 and 1967 he claimed eleven West German national titles. In 1962 he won an individual bronze at the Worlds in Buenos Aires. Three years earlier he also reached the final bouts.

In 1963 he graduated as a fencing master in Paris and then studied sports at the Sports University in Cologne, graduating in 1969. He later became head of the sports department at BASF in Ludwigshafen.
