Biography

Ryszard Zub took up fencing in 1949 and was on the Polish national team from 1955-64. A sabre fencer, Zub won all his international honors in the team event. He won team silvers at the 1956 and 1960 Olympics and a team bronze at the 1964 Olympics. He was also team world champion in 1959 and 1961-1963, while taking a team bronze at the 1957 World Championships. Domestically Zub won individual sabre silver at the 1959 Polish Championships and was on the Polish team champions from 1962-1966. After finishing his sporting career, Zub worked as a fencing coach at first in Poland and in 1970 moved to Padua, Italy. His most famous pupils were Olympic team sabre champions Michele Maffei, Mario Aldo Montano, Marco Marin and Gianfranco Dalla Barba.
