Biography

Daniel Bukantz competed at the 1948, 1952, 1956, and 1960 Olympics, placing fourth twice in team foil (1948, 1956). He won Amateur Fencers League of America (AFLA) individual foil titles in 1949, 1952-53, and 1957, and helped his team, Fencers Club of New York to win nine AFLA team titles. Bukantz won gold with the foil at the 1950 Maccabiah Games.

Bukantz attended City College of New York, winning the 1938 Intercollegiate Fencing Association foil title, and then earned a dental degree from New York University. In World War II he was a captain in the Army Dental Corps, serving in the 87th Infantry Division during the Battle of the Bulge. He practiced for many years as a dentist in New York. Bukantz also became a fencing official, judging at eight Olympics and three World Championships. He is a member of the US Fencing Hall of Fame. In 2000, he received the Pillar of Achievement Award from the International Jewish Sports Hall of Fame.
