Biography

Félicien Courbet was one of the finest breaststroke swimmers around at the time of World War I. He competed in the in the 200 and 400 metres breaststroke at three Olympic Games: 1908, 1912, and 1920. He never performed at his best at the Olympics and failed to reach a final. Courbet won his only Olympic medal, a water polo bronze, in 1912. At Paris in 1924 he returned to the Olympic stage as coach of the Spanish swimming and water polo teams.

Courbet set two world records, in the 100 m breaststroke in 1909 and in the 200 breast the following year. He was Belgian champion eleven times in all three breaststroke events contested at the time, as well as champion in lifesaving. In 1911, Courbet also won the then popular Christmas Cup, a crossing of the Seine on Christmas Day, and came second in 1913 and 1921.
