FormatSingle-elimination tournament. Bergvall system for second- and third-place.

Great Britain had won the water polo gold medal in 1908, 1912, and 1920, but lost in the first round to Hungary, 7-0, and was eliminated. The hometown French team advanced to the final where they met Belgium. Belgium had won water polo medals in 1900, 1908, 1912, and 1920, while France had never won an Olympic medal in the sport. In a major surprise, even to the French fans, France shutout Belgium, 3-0, to win the gold medal. Belgium entered the second-place tournament, held in Bergvall style, defeating Sweden, 4-3, and then meeting the United States in the silver-medal match. Belgium defeated the US, 2-1, but the Americans protested, which was allowed, only to see Belgium win silver by the same score in the replay. Hungary, Czechoslovakia, and Sweden met in the third-place tournament, with Sweden defeating both teams to meet the United States, which was seeded in as a result of losing the final match in the second-place tournament. The US narrowly defeated the Swedes, 3-2, to take the bronze medal, in an upset. Sweden had won medals in the sport in 1908, 1912, and 1920. Hungary placed fifth. The next time they would not medal in the sport, at an Olympics in which they competed, would be 1988.
