Biography

Hans-Joachim Klein came from Darmstadt and was elected 1965 German Sportsman of the Year. He swam for the combined German team at the 1964 Olympics, winning three silver medals in the three relay events, and a bronze in the 100m freestyle. In 1960 at the Rome Olympic Games, Klein finished seventh with the 4x200m freestyle relay team, and was eliminated in the heats of the 400m freestyle. He won six individual West German titles from 1959-65.

Klein studied industrial engineering for two years at the University of Southern California, and, after earning a doctoral degree, went into politics. He then worked from 1969-85 with the Hessian Economic and Traffic Ministry, then from 1985-97 with the Darmstadt District Administrator, and eventually was president of the German Olympic Society from 2001-07. Between 1997 and his retirement in 2008, Klein was the manager of the Supply and Transport Company of Leipzig.
