In the heats the United States sent out their reserves who qualified in the first position in an Olympic record 4:05.1. The USA team was so strong that they had held swim-offs to determine who would swim in the medley relay. Thompson Mann led off the final with a backstroke leg of 59.6, breaking the world record for the 100 back. Steve Clark anchored the Americans home in 52.4 for the freestyle leg, under the recognized world record for the 100 free, although he had a flying start. Clark won gold medals in all three relay events in Tokyo. The United States won in 3:58.4, a world record and the first time ever under four minutes for the distance, with Germany over three seconds back in second place.
