Hans Ljungberg

In addition to representing swimming clubs in and around the Stockholm area, Hans Ljungberg also swam for the California State University, Long Beach whilst studying there in the late 1960s. Ljungberg was a good swimmer who earned himself a place on the Swedish Olympic team for the 1968 Mexico City Games. He swam the opening leg in the 4 × 200 metres freestyle relay, with the team finishing eighth in the final. He just missed out on final of the 200 metres individual medley at the Games when he tied for ninth-fastest in the heats, with the top eight progressing.

Two years after the Mexico City Games Ljungberg won bronze in the 200 metres individual medley at the 1970 European Aquatics Championships in Barcelona, Spain. With his strong performances he was once again selected to swim at the Olympics, making the Swedish team for the 1972 München Olympics. In the final of the 4 × 200 metres freestyle relay Sweden just missed out on a medal when they finished fourth, just over a second behind the Soviet quartet. Unlike Mexico City, however, Ljungberg did reach the final of the 200 metres individual medley in München, finishing eighth. He continued to swim competitively for most of his life, later swimming in the masters category.
