Biography

Greek sportsman Dimitrios Karabatis held multiple Panhellenic track and field records and excelled in multiple sports including swimming, water polo, diving, boxing, weightlifting, and Greco-Roman wrestling. At the Panhellenic Games Karabatis won the 400 metres (1920), the discus throw (1926, 1928), and the shot put (1926–28, 1931). He competed in his first of three Olympics at the 1920 Antwerpen Games where he ran in the 100 and 200 metres but did not advance from the heats in either race. Four years later at the 1924 Paris Olympics he finished in 26th place in the shot put with a best throw of 10.955 metres. He also competed in the discus throw in Paris but did not record a distance. Karabatis’ final Olympics was the 1928 Amsterdam Games where he finished 15th in the shot put and 34th in the discus.

During the early 1920s Karabatis spent some time in Egypt where he competed in various athletics competitions, breaking the Egyptian records in the shot put and the discus. He returned to Greece in 1924 to found a boxing union, and also competed as an amateur fighter. Karabatis remained involved in sport throughout his life including becoming the President of the Hellenic Football Federation and the Vice-President of the Association of Hellenic Gymnastics Sports Associations.

Personal Bests: 100 – 11.0 (1921); 200 – 23.4 (1921); SP – 13.04 (1922); DT – 39.52 (1925).
