Biography

Polish sprinter Jan Werner was a 200 and 400 metre sprinter. He reached the final at all three Olympic appearances with the 4x400 relay, placing fourth in 1968, fifth in 1972 and highlighting his career with the silver medal in 1976, when he also reached the final of the 400 m. Werner won two golds at the European Championships in 1966 (4x400) and 1969 (400) as well as a silver (4x400) and a bronze (400) in 1971. At the European Indoors Werner added four golds with the relay, also winning two silver medals, one with the relay and one over 400. He won six Polish outdoor titles, the 200 in 1967 and 1971, and the 400 in 1968, 1970-71, and 1976. In June 1967 Werner set a European record of 20.4 for the 200 metres. He later became a coach.

Personal Best: 400 – 45.44 (1976).
