Valery Skvortsov competed in high jump at the 1964 and 1968 Olympics, just missing the podium in 1968 when he finished fourth. Skvortsov studied at Berdychiv Secondary School from 1952-63. He was gold medalist in the high jump at the 1965 Universiade, and twice won the European Indoor title, in 1966 and 1968. In 1966 Skvortsov won a bronze medal at the European Championships, and he finished eighth at that event in 1969.
