Biography

Mike Freeman was educated at St. Paul´s School, Hammersmith, before being accepted as a Royal Air Force cadet at RAF Cranwell. After a long career in the RAF, he went on to become a wing commander. At school, Freeman played for the St. Paul´s rugby first XV and continued playing for their Old Boys after leaving school. Freeman was also a fine cricketer and water polo player, and after joining the RAF became a keen bobsleigher.

Freeman won a bronze medal in the four-man bob at the 1968 European Championships at Sankt Moritz (St. Moritz). Just weeks later the same four of Freeman, John Blockley, Tim Thorn, and John Brown took part in the Grenoble Winter Olympics. All four crew members were serving in the Royal Air Force (RAF) at the time.

In addition to his medal in the European four-man event, Freeman also won bronze in the two-man event with Blockley. The two men were stationed at RAF Manby at the time. Unfortunately for Freeman and his colleagues they could not replicate their European success at Grenoble. Freeman was selected for a second Olympics at Sapporo in 1972 when he also had the honour of being the GB Flag Bearer at the Opening Ceremony.
