Austrian luger Gerhard was the father of David and Nico Gleirscher, who both also became Olympic lugers. Gerhard placed seventh in three Olympic editions; 1992 in the men’s doubles with Markus Schmidt, and in the men’s singles in the next two editions at Lillehammer 1994 and Nagano 1998. At the 1991 World Championships and the 1992 Europeans, Gleirscher won silver medals with the mixed teams. In 1997, he added a mixed team gold medal and a bronze medal in the men’s singles. He was a soldier by profession.
