Description

Burundi’s National Olympic Committee was founded on 24 October 1990 and given official recognition by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in September 1993 at the IOC session in Monaco. Burundi first competed at the 1996 Olympic Games, but has not yet competed at the Olympic Winter Games. Burundi has competed in all Olympic Games since then, mainly in athletics (track and field), but also in judo and swimming. In 1996, Burundi won one medal, a gold by Vénuste Niyongabo in the men’s 5,000 metres of track & field athletics. In 2016 Francine Niyonsaba won a silver medal in the women’s 800 metres in athletics.
