Description

Burundi’s National Olympic Committee was founded on 24 October 1990 and given official recognition by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in September 1993, at the IOC session in Monaco. Burundi first competed at the 1996 Olympic Games but has not yet competed at the Olympic Winter Games. The NOC has competed at all Olympic Games since then, mainly in track and field athletics, but also in boxing, judo, and swimming.

In 1996, Burundi won one medal, a gold by Vénuste Niyongabo in the men’s 5,000 metres of track & field athletics. In 2016 Francine Niyonsaba won a silver medal in the women’s 800 metres in athletics. Through 2022, these remain the only medals for Burundian athletes.
