Artistic Gymnastics at the 1964 Summer Olympics

Dates 18 – 23 October 1964
Medal Events 14

The 1964 Olympic gymnastics competition was held at the Tōkyō Taiikukan, or Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium. The facility had been built in 1954 to host the World Wrestling Championships. It was renovated in 1990 and continues to be used as a sports venue.

In the men’s events, Japan and the Soviet Union both won nine medals, but Japan won five golds to only one for the Soviets. Only six nations won medals in the men’s competition. The top nation among the women was the Soviet Union with three golds and 10 medals, but Czechoslovakia’s Věra Čáslavská was the women’s star in 1964, winning the all-around and two apparatus gold medals.
