Badminton at the 2020 Summer Olympics

Dates 24 July – 2 August 2021
Medal Events 5

The format for the badminton tournament at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics remained that same as it had since 1996, when mixed doubles were added to the program of men’s and women’s singles and doubles. The events took place at Musashino Forest Sport Plaza in Tokyo, a new venue constructed specifically for the Olympics. Azerbaijan, Malta, Pakistan, and Myanmar all made their Olympic badminton début at these Games.

For many years, China had been the most successful nation in badminton, and although they had not been as dominant in 2016 in Rio, they had a good showing in Tokyo, winning medals in every event, including gold in the women’s singles, and picked up both gold and silver in the mixed doubles for a total of six. The only other multiple medallists were Taiwan, who won their first Olympic badminton medals with gold in the men’s doubles and silver in the women’s singles, and Indonesia, who won the women’s doubles and took bronze in the men’s singles. Denmark’s Viktor Axelsen, who won the men’s singles, was the only medallist from outside of Asia.
