Two Person Keelboat (Star), Open

In 1988 the American crew of Mark Reynolds and Hal Haenel led going into the final race, but in that race, their mast broke and they could not finish, dropping back to a silver medal. They returned in 1992 and overcame that disappointment by winning two of the first five races and finishing second or third in the others. They built a big lead and were able to skip the final race and win the gold medal. Silver went to New Zealand, skippered by Rod Davis. Davis had won a gold medal in 1984 in Soling. Since then he had moved to New Zealand to help with their America’s Cup challenges and changed nationalities, competing for New Zealand at the 1992, 1996, and 2000 Olympics. The bronze medal Canadian crew of Ross MacDonald and Eric Jespersen competed again in 1996, but finished only 14th. With a different partner, however, MacDonald would win a silver medal in this event at the 2004 Olympics.
