Kristine Roug of Denmark was the 1994 and 1995 World Champion and favored in Savannah. In the first six races, she had two wins, three seconds, and a third, and after that, raced conservatively to win the gold medal. Her victory made her the first Danish woman to win an Olympic gold medal since 1948 and, at the time, the youngest Danish gold medalist ever, although this was bettered a few days later by Tonje Kjærgaard when the Danish women won handball gold.

Dutch silver medalist Margriet Matthijsse would repeat as the silver medalist in this event in 2000. In 1999 she was named ISAF World Sailor of the Year. Fourth-place finisher Shirley Robertson of Great Britain would win the Europe gold medal in 2000 and then switch to Yngling, and win the gold medal in that class at Athina in 2004.
