Welterweight, Greco-Roman (≤78 kilograms), Men

Date16 – 19 October 1964
StatusOlympic
LocationKomazawa Gymnasium, Komazawa Olympic Park, Tokyo
Participants19 from 19 countries
FormatScoring by negative points, with negative points given for any result short of a fall. Accumulation of 6 negative points eliminated the wrestler.

After four rounds four wrestlers were tied with 5 bad points – Kiril Petkov of Bulgaria, Anatoly Kolesov of the Soviet Union, Bertil Nyström of Sweden, and Bolesław Dubicki of Poland. In round five Kolesov and Nyström drew, as did Petkov and Dubicki, which left them all with 7 bad points and theoretically eliminated, so that required another round to determine the medalists. In that round Petkov and Nystrom drew, as did Nystrom and Dubicki, which meant that Kolesov’s victory by decision over Dubicki was the determining factor to give Kolesov the gold medal. Petkov won the silver medal over Nystrom based on lower bodyweight. Kolesov was World Champion in 1962-63 and would win again in 1965.
