Jason Kenny (GBR) was the reigning Olympic keirin champion but he did not return to the Paris Games to defend his title after retiring following the Tokyo Games. Nonetheless, the event still had a star-studded field featuring the other Tokyo medalists, Azizul Awang (MAS) and Harrie Lavreysen (NED), who won silver and bronze, respectively, along with Kevin Quintero (COL), Matthew Richardson (AUS), and Shinji Nakano (JPN), the three medalists from the World Track Championships in Glasgow.

The first heat was the most eventful, with Azizul Awang being disqualified from the competition for incorrect behavior behind the derny. All of the other favorites made it through to the quarter-finals without the need of the repêchage. The big eliminations came in the third and final heat of the quarter-finals, with Jeffrey Hoogland (NED) and Kevin Quintero failing to finish in the first four places.

The first semi-final was a relatively calm affair that saw Jack Carlin (GBR), Matthew Glaetzer (AUS), and Shinji Nakano all advance to the A final for a chance to win a medal. In the second semi-final, Matthew Richardson finished ahead of Harrie Lavreysen to qualify for the final, along with Shah Firdaus Sahrom (MAS). For the other three riders, however, it was not meant to be. Hamish Turnbull (GBR) and Luca Spiegel (GER) did not finish the race after crashing, and Kaiya Ota (JPN) was disqualified following a second warning for moving down the track.

Harrie Lavreysen proved to be unbeatable in the final to win his third gold in six days at the Paris Games. The Australian duo of Matthew Richardson and Matthew Glaetzer finished just behind the Dutchman to win silver and bronze, respectively. Jack Carlin and Shinji Nakano were involved in a crash on the last lap, with neither rider finishing the race, and Shah Firdaus Sahrom ended up being relegated to finish sixth.
