Japan’s Haruka Kitaguchi had won the 2023 World Championships and the 2023 Diamond League final. Known for coming through in late rounds, she was a slight favorite at Paris 2024. Also considered medal contenders were the other medalists from the 2023 Worlds – Colombia’s Flor Ruiz (silver) and Australian MacKenzie Little (bronze).

All three made the final by surpassing the qualifying standard of 62 metres. Kitaguchi was the fourth thrower in the final, and her first-round mark of 65.80 metres took the lead and kept the lead. It would hold up for the gold medal.

Behind her, Little struggled and would not make the final three rounds, finishing last among the finalists. Ruiz fared better but her second-round mark of 63.00 metres brought her only fifth place. The other medals were decided in round three. Surprising South African Jo-Ané van Dyk threw 63.93 to move into second and eventually take the silver medal. Croatian Sara Kolak then threw 63.40 to stand third, but it would not last. Czechia’s Nikola Ogrodníková followed that with what would be the bronze medal mark of 63.68 metres.

None of the final eight throwers improved their marks in the last three rounds, although Kitaguchi’s fifth round throw of 64.73 would have sufficed for the gold medal, had she needed it. Her gold medal was the first ever by a Japanese woman in an athletics field event.
