This was the Olympic début of badminton mixed doubles. The last two World Championships had been won by Europeans – 1993 by the mixed team of Thomas Lund (DEN) and Catrine Bengtsson (SWE), and 1995 by the Danish team of Lund and Marlene Thomsen. But Lund and Thomsen, also the 1995 All-England champions, did not enter the mixed event in Atlanta. The 1996 All-England title was won by Korea’s Na Gyeong-Min and Park Ju-Bong, who were also world ranked #1. Park had won a gold medal in 1992 in men’s doubles. The mixed final came down to Ra/Park against another Korean pair, Gir Yeong-A and Kim Dong-Mun, the 5th-ranked team in the world. The match went three games, with Gir and Kim winning, 15-12, in the final game. Gir and Park would soon retire, and Kim and Ra would begin competing together, winning the 1999 World Championships.
