Canada’s Linda Thom became the first woman to win an Olympic shooting gold medal, as this was the first women’s event held in 1984. She and American Ruby Fox tied for first with 585, but Thom won the shoot-off 198-197. In 1984 Thom was named Canada’s outstanding female athlete. She was given the Order of Canada in 1985, and was inducted into the Canadian Sports Hall of Fame in 1992. Fox had been World Champion in air pistol in 1979.
