Sixteen fighters competed in a single-elimination tournament. The event was won by Korean Chung Kook-Hyun, who had also won the World Championship in both 1985 and 1987. Chung won the event by defeating Italy’s Luigi D’Oriano in the final, when the referee stopped the contest.
