Johannes Høsflot Klæbo was the two-time defending champion and had already won the 20 km skiathlon at Milano-Cortina. He had won all four of the sprint events on the 2025/26 World Cup circuit and it was difficult to imagine anybody defeating him. Klæbo led the qualifying by more than 2½ seconds over surprising American Ben Ogden, who was almost three seconds ahead of France’s Jules Chappaz. In the quarter-finals Klæbo and Ogden won the first two heats, respectively, but Chappaz failed to make the semi-finals, having the misfortune to be drawn in heat one against Klæbo, and placing third.
The two semi-finals were won by Klæbo and Czechia’s Jiří Tuž. Ogden made the final, but only as a lucky loser as he was third in heat one, behind Klæbo and Finland’s Lauri Vuorinen. The final saw Klæbo and Ogden leading until the Norwegian pulled ahead on a hill before the run-in to the finish. Ogden was less than a second back for silver but stunningly was almost six seconds ahead of the bronze medalist, Norway’s Oskar Opstad Vike. Nobody else was close to the podium.
Ogden’s silver medal was the first by an American male in cross-country skiing since Bill Koch won silver in the 30 km at the 1976 Innsbruck Winter Olympics. Ogden would later win another silver in the team sprint, accompanied by Gus Schumacher, to join Jessie Diggins as the only Americans with multiple Olympic cross-country medals.
This was the second gold medal for Klæbo at Milano-Cortina and he would go to dominate the sport, winning all six of the available men’s gold medals. Klæbo’s three-peat victory in the sprint was the 14th time this had been done at the Olympic Winter Games – through 2026, nobody had won four consecutive titles in the same individual Winter event in any sport.
