With three of the top five finishers in the individual competition, the Soviet Union was an easy winner of the team gold medal. The Soviets had previously won the team gold in 1956 and 1964, and were slight favorites, having won the World Championships in 1969 and 1971. Since 1952, Hungary and the Soviet Union had alternated winning the gold medal in team pentathlon – Hungary in 1952, 1960, and 1968, and the USSR in 1956, 1964, and 1972. Hungary finished second, led by the individual gold medalist, András Balczó.
