In 1927, Sabin Carr broke the world record by vaulting 4.27 to win the IC4As in Philadelphia. This was the first-ever clearance of 14-feet. At the West Coast Relays in 1928, defending gold medalist Lee Barnes bettered that with 4.30, and was favored in Amsterdam.
The final was held in a pouring rain. Five vaulters were left after 3.95 (12-11½) – Carr, Barnes, two other Americans (Bill Droegemueller and Charles McGinnis), and Canadian Vic Pickard. Only Carr and Droegemueller succeeded at 4.10. When Carr cleared 4.20 (13-9¼), the gold medal was his. The Americans swept the medals, as they had in 1924.
Third to seventh places were decided in jump-offs. McGinnis cleared 4.10 to take the bronze medal, while Pickard and Barnes missed at that height and also at 3.95. They both then cleared 3.80, and the bar was moved back up to 3.95 metres, at which Pickard cleared for fourth place, while Barnes settled for fifth. Yonetaro Nakazawa and Henry Lindblad jumped off for sixth and seventh places. They both cleared 3.95 metres and 3.80 metres, and the bar was then lowered to 3.65, at which Nakazawa was successful while Lindblad was not.
