High Jump, Men

Date10 – 11 August 1984
LocationLos Angeles Memorial Coliseum, Los Angeles, California
Participants30 from 20 countries

The best jumper since 1980 had been West German Dietmar Mögenburg, who had set a world record of 2.35 (7-8½) in 1980, and had been 1982 European Champion. But in 1983, China produced a superb jumper in Zhu Jianhua, who set three world records leading up to Los Angeles. Also considered was American Dwight Stones, bronze medalist from 1972 and 1976, who was making somewhat of a comeback and had won the US Olympic Trials. Mögenburg won the competition fairly easily, jumping 2.35 (7-8½) with no misses, failing at a world record 2.40 (7-10½). Zhu was clear thru 2.31 (7-7), but when preparing to jump at 2.33 (7-8), lost his concentration when 1,500 metre runner Steve Ovett collapsed near him on the infield, and the officials asked him to hold up for a bit. Surprising 18-year old Sweden Patrik Sjöberg won the silver medal, with Stones finishing fourth.
