Marie-Chantal Depetris-Demaille

Regarded as one of the best French female fencers of her era Marie-Chantal Depetris-Demaille won a plethora of medals and titles during her career, including becoming the world foil champion. Depetris-Demaille won more than 70 medals at world and European events, seven World Cups, and two national titles, and competed at three Olympic Games. She made her Olympic début at the 1964 Tokyo Games, finishing sixth in the team foil event. Two years later she won her first medal at the World Championships with a bronze in the team foil. At the 1968 Mexico City Olympics she placed ninth in the individual foil and just missed out on a team medal when France finished fourth.

Depetris-Demaille began the 1970s with bronze in the team foil at the World Championships before having her best performances on the world stage. In 1971 she became only the second French woman, after Renée Garilhe, to win a world title when she won gold in the individual foil in Wien. That same year she also won an individual gold at the Mediterranean Games. Depetris-Demaille made her third and final appearance at the Olympics at the 1972 München Games, finishing fourth in the individual competition and sixth in the team event.

After retiring from competitions Depetris-Demaille became a fencing referee and coach, officiating in multiple tournaments and events. She later competed as a veteran, winning more than 20 titles, including three golds with three different weapons at the 2019 Cognac European Veteran Championships.
