Biography

Helga Mees was born in Saarbrücken and started under her maiden name in 1960 and 1964 for the combined German team. In 1968 she competed under the married name Volz-Mees for West Germany, having married West German wrestler Gerd Volz. She might also have started in 1972, but failed to qualify at the crucial tournament. Beside her silver medal in the individual foil and her team bronze in the 1964 Olympics she won team silver (1958) and team bronze (1959) at the World Championships. Domestically she won individual foil titles in 1960 and 1961. She was one of the few German athletes starting for three different German countries: until 1956 for Saar, until 1967 for the combined German team and since 1968 for West Germany.
