Biography

The son of a French fencing master who settled in London and started Britain’s most famous fencing dynasty. Although not as successful as his brother René, Raymond Paul won four national epee titles, two gold medals at the Commonwealth Games and a bronze medal in the team foil at the 1955 world championships.

He married athlete June Foulds, an Olympic relay medallist in both 1952 and 1956 although the two later divorced. Their son Steven went on to emulate his parents and competed in three Olympic Games as a fencer. Raymond Paul also made a brief foray into the movies and acted as fencing double for Errol Flynn in the film “The Dark Avenger”.
