Biography

Graham Paul was a member of the famous Paul fencing dynasty that made 17 Olympic appearances between them. Graham took part in all five Olympics between 1968-84, apart from 1980. His best finish was sixth with the British foil team in both 1976 and 1984. Individually his best result was in reaching the foil quarter-finals in 1972, as did his brother Barry. Unfortunately, they both finished last in their respective pools. Graham also took part in the individual and team épée at München.

Graham Paul´s finest moments internationally came at the British Empire and Commonwealth Games, where he won foil team gold and individual bronze at Kingston, Jamaica, in 1966. At Edinburgh four years later, he replicated that medal haul. Graham was outstanding as a junior and won the national under-20 national epée title in 1965. Then, as a London University student, he won the British Universities’ épée title three times. Paul also won six senior national titles at épée and foil between 1966-73, being champion with both weapons in 1971.

A member of the famous Salle Paul, founded by his grandfather in 1931, Graham helped them win the national team championship on several occasions. He later enjoyed a successful career as a veteran fencer, winning several British titles, and at the inaugural Veteran World Fencing Championships in Switzerland in 1998, Paul won an épée silver medal.
