Biography

With his twin brother Eric, Vilhelm Carlberg was the youngest of four children of a veterinarian and his wife. Their father died early, when the twins were only 12-years-old. Both twins became officers in 1901 and finished their military career with the rank of major. Both also become physical education directors in 1911.

Vilhelm Carlberg competed in four Olympics and was able to medal at each participation. He won a total of eight medals, most of them in team events, which were held at the Olympics up to 1924, but he also won three individual medals, gold in the 1912 small-bore rifle, disappearing target; silver in the 1924 rapid-fire pistol; and bronze in 1906 dueling pistol. At the 1913 World Championships held, in Camp Perry, Ohio (USA), he won gold in free pistol and bronze with the free pistol team. In 1921 Carlberg married the singer Elsa Reuter.
