Biography

Scott Miller was a two-time medalist in swimming at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, winning silver in the 100 butterfly and a bronze in the medley relay. He won four medals, including two golds, at the 1994 Commonwealth Games, and both butterfly gold medals at the 1995 Pan Pacific Championships, winning five medals in all at that meet in 1993 and 1995. He was also short-course World Champion in the 100 butterfly in 1995, adding a silver in the 200 fly, and winning four medals in all at that meet, with the other two in relays.

Miller then started a trucking business but that collapsed during the COVID-19 pandemic. He had a history of mental health issues and was a recreational drug user.

Miller became involved in a drug distribution ring, using a secret compartment in a Toyota Camry that he used to transport methamphetamine, melted and hidden in eight white candles. A search of his home in February 2021 revealed heroin in a bag in his wardrobe, several mobile phones, and more than $72,000 in proceeds from crime stashed in a bag, hidden inside a locked safe. He told police that he ran an escort agency.

Miller went to trial in 2022 in the New South Wales District Court along with two of his associates, Wayne Johnson and Justin Szabolics. Police had been alerted to Miller’s actions with hidden cameras in the Bahamas that showed Miller and Johnson handing the drugs over to Szabolics and another man, and then speeding away from a roadside police stop and dumping a bag of drugs behind a tree off the Hume Highway.

Miller pled guilty and was sentenced to five years in jail for playing a “central role” in a drug supply operation. The judge in the case took into account his history of mental health problems that began as a teenager while training at the Australian Institute of Sport.
