Biography

Thelma Hopkins had the following podium finishes at major championships: 2nd in the 1956 Olympics High Jump; 1st in the 1954 British Empire and Commonwealth Games High Jump, 2nd in the 1954 British Empire and Commonwealth Games Long Jump. In the 1954 British Empire and Commonwealth Games 80 metres hurdles she was eliminated in the heats of the 80 metres hurdles. She also finished sixth in the 1958 British Empire and Commonwealth Games 4×110 yards relay (with Mary Peters, Maeve Kyle and the non-Olympian Bridget Robinson), seventh in the long jump, and eighth in the high jump. At the 1962 British Empire and Commonwealth Games Hopkins finished sixth in the long jump and ninth in the high jump. In all British Empire and Commonwealth Games she competed for Northern Ireland.

Also played hockey and squash for Ireland.

Personal Bests: HJ – 1.74 (1956); LJ – 6.11 (1956).
