Description

Togo was known as French Togoland before gaining independence from France on 27 April 1960. The National Olympic Committee was founded on 16 February 1963 and recognized by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) on 7 October 1965 during the IOC Session in Madrid. Togo débuted at the 1972 München Olympics. It then missed the 1976 and 1980 editions because of boycotts, but has since attended all Games.

The West African nation won its first Olympic medal in 2008, when Benjamin Boukpeti won a surprise bronze medal in K-1 kayak slalom canoeing event.

In 2014, cross-country skier Mathilde Amivi Petitjean became the first ever Winter Games competitor for Togo, along with alpine skier Alessia Afi Dipol. Amivi Petitjean also competed at PyeongChang in 2018, and these have been the only Winter Olympic competitors for Togo. Togo has not yet had a male Winter Olympian, one of only five nations to be represented at the Olympic Winter Games by women only (along with the Honduras, Malta, Paraguay, and Singapore).
