Australians Tom King and Mark Turnbull won the 2000 World Championship in May, but they had little international reputation prior to that. They took the lead after winning the third race, but then dropped down, only to re-take the lead with a race eight victory. The American team of Paul Foerster and Bob Merrick won 4 the 11 races, including the last two, but when King and Turnbull finished second in the final race, they had the gold medal, with the USA second. Foerster would return in 2004, with Kevin Burnham, and win the gold medal in this class. Foerster had also won a silver medal at the 1992 Olympics in Flying Dutchman.
