The defending champion was the United States’ Athing Mu but she had run afoul of the US Olympic Trials system, and did not qualify for Paris after a fall in the final. This left Great Britain’s Keely Hodgkinson, who had been dominant all year, as the favorite, with Kenya’s Mary Moraa, the 2023 World Champion, expected to challenge her. Hodgkinson was looking to shake her reputation as someone who always made the podium but had yet to win a major international gold. She had won silver in the event at the 2020 Olympics and at the 2022 and 2023 World Championships.

As the runners broke on the backstretch of the final, Hodgkinson moved to the lead and controlled the race from the front, leading at the bell in 58.30. Moraa challenged her on the final turn but Hodgkinson had too much left and pulled away on the straight for the long-desired gold medal.

Moraa tired on the homestretch and would get bronze after being passed by surprising Ethiopian Tsige Duguma for the silver medal. Fourth-place went to St. Vincent & the Grenadines runner Shafiqua Maloney, who just missed winning the first ever Olympic medal for her country. She did, however, set national records for the event in round one and the semi-final.
