The #1 seeds were Indonesia’s Candra Wijaya and Tony Gunawan. Wajaga had won the 1997 World Championships with Budiarto Sigit, but Sigit failed a doping test in 1998. Although he was eligible again in 2000, Wajaga chose to play the Olympics with Gunawan. Together Wajaga and Gunawan had won the 1999 All-Englands. The defending champions, Ricky and Rexy (Ricky Subagja and Rexy Mainaky), were back but would not get past the quarter-finals. The 1999 World Champions were Korea’s Lee Dong-Su and Yu Yong-Seong. The final came down to Wajaga and Gunawan against Lee and Yoo. It was a long, tough match – one rally lasting 79 strokes, with the Indonesians prevailing in three sets, 15-10, 9-15, 15-7, in 77 minutes.
