StatusOlympic
LocationLe Forum de Montréal, Montréal, Québec
Participants90 from 20 countries

The format was similar to 1964-72, with the best six gymnasts in the team all-around advancing to the apparatus final, with the final apparatus score made up of 50% of the all-around total and a final optional program. However, nations were now limited to only two gymnasts in the finals. Soviet Nikolay Andrianov was the defending champion and won the gold medal narrowly over his teamate Vladimir Marchenko. Andrianov won seven medals in Montréal, including individual all-around gold and three apparatus golds, adding golds on vault and rings. The bronze medal went to American Peter Kormann in a huge upset. His only previous international experience had come at the 1975 Pan American Games. His medal was the first won by a US male gymnast since 1932 and only the second won by an American at a non-USA Olympics, after Frank Kriz’s gold medal on vault in 1924.
