The format was similar to 1964-72, with the best six gymnasts in the team all-around advancing to the apparatus final, with the final apparatus score made up of 50% of the all-around total and a final optional program. However, nations were now limited to only two gymnasts in the finals. The leader after team qualifying was Hungarian Imre Molnár, but he had the lowest score in the final round and dropped back to a tie for fifth with his teammate, Zoltán Magyar. Nikolay Andrianov (URS) was in second after qualifying but had the highest final round score to win the gold medal, which he would defend in 1980 at Moskva. He was followed by two Japanese gymnasts, Mitsuo Tsukahara getting silver and Hiroshi Kajiyama bronze.
