Date18 – 23 July 1976 — 19:30
StatusOlympic
LocationLe Forum de Montréal, Montréal, Québec
Participants90 from 20 countries

The format was similar to 1964-72, with the best six gymnasts in the team all-around advancing to the apparatus final, with the final apparatus score made up of 50% of the all-around total and a final optional program. However, nations were now limited to only two gymnasts in the finals. Japan’s Mitsuo Tsukahara had won this event at the 1972 Olympics, and in Montréal he had the highest score in qualifying and the final round to defend his gold medal, matching the feat of his countryman, Takashi Ono, who won this event in 1956-60. Silver went to his teammate Eizo Kenmotsu, while the bronze was shared by France’s Henry Boërio and West German Eberhard Gienger, the 1974 World Champion on high bar.
