The giant slalom was the fourth Alpine skiing event for men contested at Milano-Cortina 2026. It was held on the last part of the speed events course, which had never held any technical races before and many described it as not suitable for these events. In the ongoing giant slalom World Cup season seven races had been held with Marco Odermatt (SUI) winning three races in Sölden, Beaver Creek, and Adelboden. Loïc Meillard (SUI) won in Val d’Isère and the last race before the Games in Schladming, with the Austrians Stefan Brennsteiner and Marco Schwarz winning the other two races in Copper Mountain and Alta Badia, respectively. Odermatt also led the giant slalom World Cup standings followed by Brazilian Lucas Pinheiro Braathen, who finished second in the last three World Cup giant slalom races, and Meillard. Odermatt had also won all four giant slalom World Cups since the last Olympics (2022-25) and was the 2023 World Champion, but Austrian Raphael Haaser was the 2025 World Champion, winning on home soil in Saalbach-Hinterglemm.

In the first run Pinheiro Braathen made perfect use of his bib #1, leading the field in front of three Swiss racers, with second-placed Odermatt (+0.95) well behind, as Meillard in third (+1.57) and Tumler in fourth place (+1.89) were also well back. In the second run the three Swiss racers were only able to reduce the time difference to the leader, but the placements remained unchanged.

This gave Pinheiro Braathen his first Olympic gold medal, the first ever Winter Olympics medal for Brazil, and the first Alpine skiing Olympic gold medal for the Southern hemisphere. Pinheiro Braathen, born of a Norwegian father and Brazilian mother, had competed at the 2022 Winter Olympics for Norway, but did not finish either the slalom or giant slalom.

The best time in the second run was set by Joan Verdú, which made him the first Andorran to record a best Alpine skiing run time. Pinheiro Braathen raced on Atomic skis to give this manufacturer its first gold medal at these Games. Odermatt gave Stöckli another medal with silver, while Meillard used Rossignol to win bronze.
