4 x 100 metres Medley Relay, Men

Date27 August – 1 September 1960
StatusOlympic
LocationStadio Olimpico del Nuoto, Roma
Participants80 from 18 countries

This was a new Olympic event, but it was not hard to pick the US as the favorites. They were so strong that for the butterfly leg they left the winner of the 200 fly in Rome, Mike Troy, off the team and replaced him by Lance Larson, the controversial silver medalist in the 100 freestyle. In the heats the Americans’ time was over six seconds faster than the Australians, as they broke the world record with a time of 4:09.2. They easily won the gold medal, almost seven seconds ahead of second-place Australia in the final, breaking the world mark again, with 4:08.2. Japan trailed in third, with Canada fourth, their anchor leg swum by future IOC Vice-President Dick Pound.
