Fifteen fighters competed in a single-elimination tournament. The event was won by Korean Chang Myung-Sam, which was not unusual, as Korean fighters won seven of the eight men’s classes. Chang had never medalled at the World Championships, which were won by Chinese Taipei’s Lee Chian-Hsiang in 1985 and Korean Han Jae-Koo in 1987. Chang won the event by defeating Turkey’s Cengiz Yağiz in the final.
