Biography

Brian McCowage fenced foil for Australia at the 1956, 1960, and 1964 Olympics, and also competed in team sabre at the 1964 Tokyo Games. McCowage won four silver medals, all in team events, at the 1958, 1962, and 1966 British Empire and Commonwealth Games. He was a six-time Australian Champion in foil, and took up sabre fencing later in life, with his wife’s urging – she was also a fencer. McCowage tied for first in individual sabre at the 1963 and 1964 Australian nationals.

McCowage was actually better known as a dog breeder. He began breeding dogs as a teenager, starting mostly with Scottish Terriers and Sealyham Terriers. While on fencing trips, he was often commissioned to buy dogs for owners in Australia, Great Britain, and the United States. His dogs won multiple ribbons at shows in Australia, including at the Sydney Royal Show, and he was a highly recognized international judge. In the 1960s he started breeding and showing Miniature Pinschers. McCowage’s career was as a research officer for the Reserve Bank.
