Biography

Andrea Borella was a member of the strong Italian foil team that took the gold at the 1984 Olympics. In the final against West Germany, Borella lost all of his four bouts, but his team mates pulled off an 8-7 victory. Individually, he never won an Olympic medal (placing 5th twice), but he won the World Championships in 1986. In the team event, he added four more world titles (1985, 1986, 1990 and 1994), as well as 5 silvers and a bronze. Borella was also victorious at the European Championships (1981 and 1983), won three World Cup events, and an Italian title (1986). His wife, Francesca Bortolozzi is also an Olympic fencing champion. In honor of his sporting achievements, Borella was awarded a Gold Medal by the Italian Olympic Committee.
