Biography

Renzo Nostini spent a life dedicated to the service of sport. He started as an athlete, winning fencing titles with all three weapons, though he specialized in the foil. He later became a sport administrator.

Nostini was the son of Domenico Nostini, a renowned economist. Renzo graduated in engineering in 1940, but began sports as a swimmer between 1932-34, setting two Italian individual records in the freestyle and one in the relay with his club S.S. Lazio. He also obtained good results in water polo with Lazio, rugby football with Rugby Roma, and in modern pentathlon, where he qualified for the 1936 Olympics, but could not compete because he was not a military officer.

Nostini joined the Italian national fencing team in 1937, winning at the World Championships in Paris and at an early version of the University Games in team foil alongside his brother. Between 1937-55 he won 15 medals at the World Championships, with 7 golds, 7 silvers, and 1 bronze. These were mostly in team events but he did win individual foil gold in 1950, individual foil silver in 1949, and an individual bronze in sabre in 1955. He competed at two Olympic Games (1948, 1952) where he won four silver medals in team events.

Concerning his working life, in 1946 he founded the Società di Costruzioni ing. Renzo Nostini, a company that built many sports facilities, including the Pool of the Rose in Roma, the Acquacetosa Pool and, at Napoli, the University Centre.

In 1961 Nostini became president of FIS (Italian Fencing Federation), remaining in office until 1993. Moreover he was President of Lazio Nuoto (from 1952) and of the whole sports club; President of Rugby Roma (1945, 1948-53, 1954-56), President of the CUSI (University club sports) from 1947-49, and Vice-President of the Italian Olympic committee (1967-73, 1989-93) and, until his death, Honorary President.
